What happened to old-time visiting with our neighbors and friends? When kids played together and adults enjoyed conversation? Even a meal or surely drinks of coffee for the parents and kool-aid for the kids?

Recently some friends were talking about this matter. The ladies aged between 30 and 40 years old. All remembered when their families had friends over to their home and visited each other often.

“Well, the Bible says,’we have to be friendly to have friends,’”I said. But decided that I had missed the point. These ladies were friendly and out going. So what are we missing? I talked to women who are married with children. They said that when their children grew up and were involved in school or other activities visiting, as in the past, stopped. Some said as they became busier with their jobs; traveling or other responsibilities was the reason.

It didn’t seem to make a difference whether the spouse of the house had job changes or other responsibilities affected visiting either way. This is what I see happened. As families became busier outside the home, visiting almost stopped, but just a minute. . . We start with our families early in the day. Personal love pats, information and encouragement.Then on to the gas station. “Yes Jim fill it up. Yes it is a fine day. How are you and your family?” we ask.

At work everyone is greeted. Break time, lunch time, both spent talking with friends in other words, visiting.

Shopping for food, going to the bank and standing in line at Wal Mart, visiting!

At ball games, and dance class, visiting.

Church time activities and responsibilities, yes ladies we are visiting! We are friendly, just not in each other’s homes.

I call this sound bite visiting. Our homes are for personal family care. My husband suggests to stop in front of your husband, kiss and hug him without making hand motions to the kids behind their back! We all need personal pats! The kids get personal, individual attention with soft spoken words and instructions. Truly we ladies are doing our job keeping the home fires burning and in the neighborhoods the lights are flickering.
